CDSD was established in 1999 and became a 501c3 non-profit organization at the end of 2000, and is San Diego's only Cambodian cultural performance organization. CDSD is made up of Cambodian youth from different schools within San Diego and is organized by a group of volunteered adults. The Normal Heights Cultural Council (NHCC), formed in 2001, is a group of local volunteers who seek to identify, increase awareness and enhance the cultural life of the neighborhood for the benefit of residents and visitors alike. The NHCC is creating programs that showcase the rich history, heritage and culture of the neighborhood while looking toward the future. Normal Heights was one of three neighborhoods (out of 102 in San Diego) chosen to form a Cultural Council to participate in the "Living Traditions" initiative as part of the "Share Your Heritage" program--a nationwide cultural heritage tourism initiative in cooperation with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture (SDCAC). Funded in part by the SDCAC and the San Diego Foundation Neighborhood Civic Fund. The San Diego Historical Society serves as fiscal agent for the NHCC. Media Arts Center San Diego nurtures and supports media artists working in film, video, audio, and computer-based multimedia. The organization was founded to challenge the historical exclusion of under-represented communities from the media field, and distorted images of these communities by mainstream media. MACSD seeks to provide a forum for and promote the diversity of interests of San Diego Border Region media artists through regular screenings, educational outreach, distribution, film festivals, production and technical assistance, scholarships and fiscal sponsorships.

This home was built in 1905 for George Marston, prominent San Diego merchant, philanthropist and civic leader, who was a founder and first president of the San Diego Historical Society. The George White and Anna Gunn Marston house is an early example of the work of San Diego architects William Hebbard and Irving Gill. Furnished in the style of the American Arts and Crafts Movement of the early 20th century, the interior reflects the architects' commitment to function and simplicity of design. Five acres of landscaped grounds offer a picturesque blend of English Romantic themes with California influences. The Marston House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The museum houses a prestigious collection, from which it has launched numerous exhibitions that have traveled to venues all over the world. Its more than 12,000 works of art—Spanish and Italian Old Masters, Asian and American paintings, sculpture, ceramics, bronzes and other objects—draw more than a half-million visitors a year to the Spanish Renaissance building that houses the collection. In addition, the museum holds year-round educational programs, concerts, lectures and films, and each spring it hosts the Art Alive floral extravaganza.
