| Just as the City of El Cajon has gone through several transformations, so, too, has the East County Performing Arts Center. When it first opened its doors in 1977, it was a true community effort with the City of El Cajon and the Grossmont Community College District sharing responsibilities. Over the years, Grossmont assumed more responsibility - allowing the city to oversee municipal affairs. Now, roles are reversed, and since 1997, the city has been sole proprietor, contracting with a newly-formed Arts Center Foundation - to operate theater. This non-profit entity has brought new life to East County, with world class acts, ethnic and diverse offerings - arts and entertainment to please almost every age, class, race and ethnicity.
